## Best for learning from videos and assessments: Khan Academy

For kids who learn well via videos, [Khan Academy](https://www.khanacademy.org/) is a great resource. For all grades from Class 1 to Class 12, the content is quite comprehensive and very well structured. The videos - instead of being filled with flashy animations - are simple but pedagogically very sound. Assessments are designed with potential misconceptions and pitfalls in mind, so kids get a great scaffolding in each topic while getting assessed. Not to mention - it is free.

**What works well:** Content breadth, video pedagogy quality, assessments.

**What could be better:** Kids can find it a bit dull to go video -> assessment -> video in an endless cycle. Reporting is not as detailed as something like IXL.

## Best graphing and visualisation tool: Desmos

[Desmos](https://www.desmos.com/) is a graphing calculator meant for quickly and seamlessly creating graphs digitally. It especially shines for simple, 2d Graphs, and algebra visualisation. Compared to Geogebra (the other graphing calculator in this list), it's much easier to get started, though it lacks some of the advanced features Geogebra has (especially when it comes to 3d geometry).

**What works well:** Optimised for quick and easy graphing. Also approved for standardised tests (SAT, AP and ACT).

**What could be better:** More features to reduce the feature gap between Desmos and Geogebra, especially for 3d.

## Best Game-based math fact fluency: Monster Math

The most foundational of all skills in Math is number sense and Math fact fluency. If a child is not fluent in math facts, it's very hard for them to do better in latter math, such as algebra. Instead of focussing only on drills, Monster Math helps kids see what each of the operations mean - first visually using visual representations of numbers, and then transitions to abstract notations as they get familiar. This is accompanied by a lot of practice that build both conceptual understanding and mastery of math facts. All this while kids think they are playing a puzzle game.

**What works well:** Does Math fact fluency really well, in a fun game format.

**What could be better:** More detailed reporting, like IXL. Could also cover more breadth, right now designed mainly for kids in Grades 1-3, so doesn't work for kids in higher grades.

**What works well:** Optimised for drilling, the format looks very similar to what is seen in schools.

**What could be better:** No conceptual lessons, no visual representations, can push kids towards rote-learning. Without strong concepts, rote-learning can lead to building a fragile math foundation.

## Best for Geometry and Algebra explorer: Geogebra

The platform can be useful for kids in Grades 4 onwards, especially for 2d and 3d geometry, graphing and other math topics that are related to these (such as algebra).

**What works well:** Advanced geometry, especially 3d geometry, and algebra visualisations.

**What could be better:** Not as user friendly for simpler graphing requirements, where Desmos really shines. More features, but steeper learning curve.

While parents and especially teachers love the content breadth, ability to assign homework/assignments, digital worksheet format, and loads and loads of data to make sense of where the class is - kids can show a wide variety of liking, from liking the format, to hating it especially because of the obscure "SmartScore". The content ranges from Pre-K to 12, making it very comprehensive, but also lacking in depth when it comes to concept mastery.

**What works well:** Optimised for assessments, practice, and data reporting for parents and teachers.

**What could be better:** The experience could be better, more interactive in form of visually showing and explaining concepts, as well as being more engaging for kids. SmartScore could be a little less obscure - the sudden penalty of getting something wrong when you are above 90% is very harsh and puts off a lot of kids.
